Pennsylvania’s Medical Crisis
August 29, 2008
Someday you might call your doctor’s office for an appointment, only to find that she is no longer treating patients in Pennsylvania. This is a very real possibility because doctors are leaving Pennsylvania at an alarming rate.
Inadequate control over frivolous lawsuits, and uncapped speculative awards for tenuous claims of loss, are making it harder and harder for your doctor to afford exorbitant medical malpractice insurance premiums. She may be forced to close her practice in Pennsylvania and leave to practice elsewhere, retire early, or find employment in a related field.
This has left Chester County, at times, with no available neurosurgeons, resulting in the deaths of severe head trauma patients that had long ambulance rides to neighboring counties.
Obstetricians are leaving, or limiting their practices to gynecology only, leaving mothers and babies without the care they need.
While Pennsylvania is home to several prestigious medical schools, only 8% of graduates remain here to practice. It’s simply too expensive for them to stay.
Who will treat our aging population– the second highest in the nation?
I will lead the charge to fix the broken legal system that our current Senator has been unwilling or unable to address. I will work to solve the problem, not be a part of it. Formally trained in the law, unlike my opponent, I have the experience necessary to make a difference, and I will.
On to Victory,
Steve
